Exchange Server 2010 – Service Pack 3 Update Rollup 11 (SP3 RU11) Released

On September 15, 2015, Microsoft released Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 3 Update Rollup 11 (SP3 RU11). At the time, this was not just another cumulative fix bundle. It mattered because it became the minimum Exchange 2010 version supported for coexistence with Exchange Server 2016.

Why this release mattered

Microsoft announced that Exchange 2010 SP3 RU11 was the baseline required if you wanted a supported coexistence deployment with Exchange 2016.

Besides the coexistence requirement, the rollup also included fixes such as the one documented in:

Historical notes

Current note

This post is mainly useful as historical migration context now. Microsoft still documents RU11 as the minimum Exchange 2010 build required for supported coexistence with Exchange 2016, but Exchange Server 2010 itself reached end of support on October 13, 2020.

So if you are reading this today, the actionable takeaway is not "go install RU11." It is:

  • RU11 mattered for old Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2016 transition planning
  • Exchange 2010 is now out of support
  • any remaining Exchange 2010 environment should be treated as migration debt
